About

Obtained a B.Sc.(Hons) and Ph.D. from Rhodes University and postdoctoral experience at the Weizmann Institute (Israel) and Long Ashton Research Station (Bristol, UK). Current interest is in the derivation of energy from alternatives to fossil fuel. Non-agricultural biological sources such as microalgae and kinetic energy transfer (KET) are of particular interest. Strong research background in plant and microalgae secondary metabolism with emphasis on stress- and senescence-induced changes in plant hormones, carotenoids, isoprenoids, and phospholipids. Earlier positions include; senior scientist with Nutra-Park (Madison, WI, 2003-06) to develop natural phospholipid-based agrichemicals for use as plant amendment and formulations aids,  professor at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (Uppsala, 2000-03) and University of Natal (Pietermaritzburg, 1994-2000) and research leader of a major programme dealing with the biochemistry of isoprenoids. Postgraduate students from my lab occupy positions around the world; published about 80 articles/papers, and referee for many international scientific journals and reviewer for national/inter-national grant-funding agencies.
